After camping out in our bare apartment Wednesday night, we began our cross country trip on Thursday morning July 22. Our destination for the first night was Lincoln Nebraska. We left the cool, windy area of Wyoming and drove toward hot, humid temperatures. We had hoped to make it into Lincoln in time to take the kids to the Zoo, however, we arrived right as it closed. So instead, we walked through the humidity a couple blocks from our hotel to the Children’s museum. We arrived just in time for free breadsticks and drinks they were giving out after an evening concert. The boys enjoyed them as a pre dinner snack and then they enjoyed playing in the museum for 20 minutes before it closed.
Our destination for the second day was St. Louis. Along the way we stopped to visit the Liberty Jail site. Ty was excited to sit on the grass for a picnic before we went in. Although a difficult time for the boys, we still enjoyed the opportunity to visit the location and be reminded of Joseph’s challenges that he faced during his incarceration there.
Although a replica, it was amazing to see the conditions of the jail that they experienced.
As we arrived into St. Louis and Ty saw the arch, he wanted to go up inside it. Even though it was late, we decided we might as well do it before heading to the hotel which was east outside of the city.
Fortunately we were able to get tickets (for just Ty and I) but for 45 minutes later. So we found dinner and then Ty and I rushed back, only to wait for about 45 minutes in line before we were able to get on the elevator to go to the top. Ty thought the whole experience was pretty cool.
Here is Ty at the top of the arch enjoying the view of the city at night. It took so long for us to get up to the top that by the time we arrived there, it was already dark outside.
Saturday morning we let the boys play in the hotel pool before we got our on way. Our destination was Lexington, KY. After crossing the bottom of Indiana, we stopped in Louisville to let the kids play at the Zoo. We arrived around 5 PM, but the Zoo had extended hours. It was still quite hot and humid even at that time of day. We headed straight for the splash area. I thought it would just be an area of water spraying up from the ground for the kids to run through. We did not expect the huge play area we found. Neither Chris nor I dressed to play with the kids, but Chris had on more appropriate clothes to jump in and play with the boys.
After a few minutes, Kylan finally warmed up to the idea and all he wanted to do was to go down the slides. And as soon as he would get down, he would quickly jump up and say “slide” and walk back around to the stairs. He was a little upset to have to leave.
Unfortunately the Zoo train was not running, but a mother had given us tickets to ride the tram. Kylan was just as happy with that and called it a train anyway.
Sunday, July 25th, after a full day of driving and dinner at Mellow Mushroom (one of our NC favorites) we arrived in Raleigh NC.
On Monday, the closing of our home went smoothly without any problems and once again we have a home in NC and for the time are back this time in Raleigh.
