We were excited to be at our own home for Christmas this year. Everyone kept asking what family traditions we had. Well – that was hard to answer as this was only our 2nd Christmas in NC with kids. We did not really plan anything out – but this is what we did:
Christmas Eve we had our friends the Winklers and Righters over for early dinner. The adults enjoyed visiting and eating while the kids quickly ate some food and then played and chased each other around the house. We had told Ty we would watch the Polar Express and have hot chocolate and cookies – but by the time our friends left it was bed time. So we read the scriptures about Christ birth and got the boys settled into bed. About an hour later, as we were about to get the presents out for the tree, Kylan woke up crying. Luckily he must have just been a little overtired, because we were able to calm him down and put him back to bed within 30 minutes.
Then we played “Santa” and put out all the presents and filled the stockings and actually went to bed earlier than we had been.
The boys woke at their usually time. Kylan just before 7 AM and Chris took him downstairs to get Cheerios. Ty came into our room just after 7, then we went downstairs and found Kylan and Chris. We all walked into the living room together and Ty exclaimed, “Oh wow – look at all the presents.” He carefully took his time going through each present, asking who it was for and then distributing appropriately. Once Ty unwrapped a Thomas storybook, that is all Kylan was interested in until Ty unwrapped the trains…
Kylan did eventually open one present, otherwise, Ty took care of all of his and Kylan’s gifts. Once Ty uncovered the new Thomas trains, Kylan discarded the book and decided that all the trains needed to come out of the packaging and Kylan assumed ownership of all 4 new trains.
Grandma and Papa had sent them Victor (who works at the Sodor Steamworks both boys informed us), Mighty Mac, Isobella and Arthur. Kylan ultimately became attached to Victor for the rest of the day.
Ty in his careful way, decided to begin putting his gifts away as he went. The box of Lucky Charms cereal had to be taken to the kitchen. When he unwrapped a bottle of Thomas bubble bath, he immediately had to take it up to the bathroom – in preparation for their bubble bath that night.
After all the presents were opened, Ty was excited to check out the pictures in his new picture viewer and eventually, both boys made their way to the train table while Chris made breakfast.
We had a hearty breakfast of scramble eggs w/ veggies, sausage and broiled potatoes. The boys mainly enjoyed bowls of Lucky Charms. We then enjoyed watching the Polar Express and having hot chocolate (w/ marshmellows of course).
After being lazy, we decided to go out for a walk prior to the forecasted snow storm. We made our way up to the school play ground and enjoyed playing family tag. Unfortunately our nice, peaceful day ended with Chris kicking in our door from the garage that had been locked. The door stays unlocked and we just take our garage door opener on walks, but somehow, someone had turned the lock on the door and no one realized until we came home to find we were locked out. Not a pleasant ending, but a better alternative than taking out a window right before a snow storm.
