This week in Ty’s class they put together a Holiday workshop. The kids had to apply for one of 5 jobs. Here is Ty’s job application.
Ty was assigned to the Gift wrapping department. They spent the week preparing the gifts and working in their own departments. Based on the quality of their work, they earned money each day. Here is Ty’s tally for the wages he earned each day.
On Friday, they were given real pennies based on their earnings for the week. I was able to go help in Ty’s classroom on Friday for the last day of their Holiday Workshop. On this day, the kids could go shopping using the money they had earned throughout the week to purchase gifts for family and friends they had decided on. Here is Mrs. White going over the instructions.
The volunteer parents assisted one child at a time in their shopping experience.
First – the child shopped for people on their list by selecting one of the handmade gifts the children had made throughout the week. After they had made their selections, we went to the cash registered and the children purchased each item for .02 cents each – this is where they paid using the pennies they had earned.
Then we helped them wrap up their gifts – using either tissue paper or a gift bag they children had made.
Finally, they placed the gift card on the package. Ty asked me to go shopping with him. While Ty waits his turn in line to pay for his gifts, he excitedly shows me his earnings from the week. He was very excited that he had change left after purchasing his gifts that he could take home and put in his piggy bank.

Ty was very excited to shop for his family and friends. He also enjoyed selecting gift bags for each gift and wrapping them up.
If the child was not shopping, they were in a center of choice. Ty choose the building center. Spencer and Ty were excited to show me the lego camping trailer they had built.
When I asked Ty what his favorite part of the Holiday Workshop week was he replied, “Making stuff and shopping.”
He came home from school with his bag of gifts and was excited to put presents under the tree.
